What happens during an in-home lactation consultation? During a lactation consultation at home, I’ll focus on several key aspects to help improve your breastfeeding experience:
Latch Assessment: I’ll observe how your baby latches onto the breast. A proper latch is crucial for effective feeding and comfort.
Positioning: I’ll suggest different positions for breastfeeding to find what works best for you and your baby, ensuring both of you are comfortable.
Oral Anatomy: I’ll check your baby’s oral anatomy, looking at things like the shape of their mouth, tongue, and any potential concerns related to feeding issues.
Feeding Techniques: I’ll provide tips on how to help your baby suck effectively and efficiently.
Signs of Milk Transfer: I’ll look for signs that your baby is feeding well, such as swallowing and how they respond during and after feeding.
Comfort and Pain Management: If you’re experiencing any discomfort, I’ll help identify the cause and suggest solutions.
Emotional Support: Breastfeeding can be challenging, and I’m here to support you emotionally, answering any questions and helping you feel more confident.
This comprehensive approach aims to ensure a positive breastfeeding journey for you and your baby.
How long does a lactation consultation last? A typical lactation consultation lasts 90 to 120 minutes. This can vary depending on circumstances.
When should baby eat on the day of the visit? It is best if baby is hungry, but not starving. A good way to achieve this can be to feed baby half as long (or as much) as you normally would, about 30-45 minutes prior to the visit. If this isn't possible, it's okay! Babies usually end up eating at some point during the visit.
Should I clean up my home before you arrive? No! Don't lift a finger. I want you to be comfortable and feel at ease. Cleaning in anticipation of a guest can raise one's anxiety level. It is important for you to just focus on you and your baby on the day of your visit.
